Rose POV Excercise

Q Without rewriting anything, just describe and explain how the original story would be different if told by a different narrator: a different character or person (1st person narrator, 2nd person narrator, 3rd person narrator, or omniscient narrator). Again, imagine how the story would be different if the point of view were changed by either a different character narrating or the story being narrated in a different narrative "person," 1st, 2nd, 3rd, or omniscient. For example, scholars commonly accept that "A Rose for Emily" is narrated by an unnamed towns-person, who shares the town gossip about Miss Emily with us, the reader. (In fact, as readers, we too, become part of the gossip whirlwind and mystery surrounding Miss Emily.) But how would the story be different if, say, Miss Emily were telling the story? Or her man-servant, Toby?

William Faulkner’s short story “A Rose for Emily” reflects the life of a lonely woman by the name Emily Grierson who is also the protagonist of the same. This story has been told by a collective narrator most of them being the townspeople. Faulkner wanted the readers to understand how the neighbours viewed Emily from the start so that her lifestyle can be clearly reflected. He also wanted the readers to think how the outside people are viewing her but it also leaves them with lots of scope to interpret the way Emily really felt from inside.
